DAY 0 - WELCOME TO TANZANIA

Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), where you will meet our company representative (Guide or Driver), and transfer to Masailand Safari Lodge. The hotel will provide all the essentials for a comfortable stay: cosy rooms, hot water, and Internet access. In the evening, there will be a briefing with our Kilimanjaro mountain guides, who will also make sure you are ready to begin the climb.

DAY 1 - MACHAME GATE (6,000 FT) TO MACHAME CAMP (9.700 FT)

Elevation : Machame Gate (6,000 ft) to Machame Camp (9.700 ft)
Distance covered: 10.8km / 6.7mi
Approx. time taken: 7 hours

On the way to Mount Kilimanjaro National Park, the journey passes through the village of Machame, which is located on the lower slopes of the mountain. Once you leave the park gate you will walk through the rain forest on a winding trail up a ridge until you reach the Machame Camp.

DAY 2 - MACHAME CAMP (9,700 FT) TO SHIRA CAMP (12,600 FT)

Elevation: Machame Camp (9,700 ft) to Shira Camp (12,600 ft)
Distance covered: 5.4km / 3.4mi
Approx. time taken: 5 hours

Shortly after leaving the Machame camp you will leave the glades of the rain forest and continue on an ascending path to a steep rocky ridge, covered with heather. The route then turns west onto a river gorge onto the Shira Campsite.

DAY 3 - SHIRA CAMP (12,600 FT) TO BARRANCO CAMP (12,950 FT)

Elevation: Shira Camp (12,600 ft) to Barranco Camp (12,950 ft)
Distance covered: 10.8km / 6.7mi
Approx. time taken: 7 hours

From the Shira Plateau, you will continue to the east up a ridge eventually passing the Lava Tower, called the “Shark’s Tooth.” Shortly after the tower, you come to the second junction which brings you up to the Arrow Glacier and continuing on to the Barranco campsite.

DAY 4 - BARRANCO CAMP (12,950 FT.) TO KARANGA CAMP (13,780 FT)

Elevation: Barranco Camp (12,950 ft.) to Karanga Camp (13,780 ft)
Distance covered: 5.5km / 3.4mi
Approx. time taken: 4 hours

Leave Barranco after breakfast with a challenging scramble up the Barranco Wall. This is the most difficult part of the day. Once you reach the top of the wall you will make a small descent to the Karanga Valley and spend the night a Karanga Camp.

DAY 5 - KARANGA CAMP (13,780 FT) TO BARAFU CAMP (15,200 FT)

Elevation: Karanga Camp (13,780 ft) to Barafu Camp (15,200 ft)

You leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge passing up the Barranco Wall and through the Karanga Valley. From Karanga head up a moraine ridge where views can be spectacular. The final stage to Barafu is quite steep, and as always it’s taken it very slowly. In the evening your guide briefs you for the final ascent.(See Machame Route 7 dayes for optional Allimatization Day: Stay a night at Karanga Camp (13,100 ft) before continuing the next day to Barafu Camp. This gives you a little extra time to acclimate.)

DAY 6 - BARAFU CAMP (15,200 FT.) TO SUMMIT (19,340 FT) TO MWEKA HUT (10,000 FT)

Elevation: Barafu Camp (15,200 ft.) to Summit (19,340 ft) to Mweka Hut (10,000 ft)
Distance covered: 16.4km / 9.6mi
Approx. time taken: 12 - 15 hours

Very early in the morning (midnight to 2am), you will continue your way to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. At Stella Point, you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see (weather permitting). It can be very cold at night at these elevations, but it will be quite warm by the end of the hiking day. You will want clothing for both extremes with you. From the summit, we now make our descent continuing straight down to the Mweka Hut camp site, stopping at Barafu for lunch. Mweka Camp is situated in the upper forest and mist or rain can be expected in the late afternoon.

DAY 7 - MWEKA CAMP (10,000 FT.) TO MWEKA GATE (6,000 FT)

Distance covered: 9.1km / 7.5miles
Approx. time taken: 3 hours

From Mweka Camp you continue the descent down to the Mweka Gate. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy). At the Mweka Gate summiting climbers receive their summit certificates. Our driver will meet you at the gate and transport you to your Arusha/Moshi hotel (depending on availability, overnight stay included in our packages.

FAQs

How much weight of equipment will I carry?
You are expected to carry your own day pack, with only things which should be able to sustain you until you reach the next camp at the end of the day. You do not need to carry your personal backpack/ duffel pack - It will be carried by our porters.
What if I am slower than the other trekkers?
No worries about that - this is a common concern. It is much better for your body if you proceed slowly and guides will permanently remind you about this (“pole-pole” - which means “slowly slowly”). By walking slowly, your body will much better acclimatize to high altitude.

There is plenty of time allocated each day for the treks, even for those who like to go very slowly.
What if I cannot make it to the top?
Some climbers may fall short of reaching the summit, but not at the expense of their overall experience. Even for those who never reached the top, the experience of the wonders of Kilimanjaro is very rewarding.

If one or more members of the group decide they cannot continue, or if a guide deems it unsafe for an individual (or a group) to continue, they are escorted to the most convenient campsite or hut.

Our guides intimately know the network of shortcuts to escort climbers to safety, and they are trained to act quickly and calmly under any circumstance.
What is the accommodation like during trekking?
For Machame route, you will sleep in 3 dome-style Tents, two people each. The Tents are modern and have an outer flysheet and large vestibules keep equipment from the elements. They are set up, broken down and carried- along with everything else- by our porters.

There will be dining tents with chairs and tables where all meals will be served. Before any meal, we will provide soap and hot water for washing your hands.
What is the food like on the mountain?
For each trek on the Mountain, a dedicated cook will be part of the logistical team. They are professional chefs and have the ability to prepare different kinds of dishes.
What if I get sick up the mountain?
You shouldn't worry- You are in safe hands. Our guides are professionally trained to handle all sorts of distress and respond quickly and accordingly. They all have Wilderness First Aid Responder qualification and they will all time bring you to safety. They will directly call for an emergency evacuation if the situation worsens.
When and where does the tour start?
